Bengaluru: Legal hurdle for Yettinahole project cleared

Bengaluru,Oct 6 (DHNS): Karnataka has succeeded in convincing the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in moving ahead with the Rs 13,000 crore Yettinahole project, said K Jaiprakash, Managing Director, Visvesvaraya Jala Nigam Ltd.

An appeal was filed before NGT, New Delhi on September 21, 2016, by KN Somashekar, who had challenged the implementation of the project on the Centre's grant of forest clearance.

Addressing the media in Bengaluru on Friday, Jaiprakash said that Karnataka had contended that forest clearance had been obtained after following due procedures.

The project was an integrated drinking water project and that no irrigation component was involved. He said that Karnataka convinced NGT that the forest land required was minimal (13.92 ha).

While the project would replenish groundwater recharge leading to dilution of the chemical contaminant; it would meet the drinking water needs of people of Kolara and Chikkaballapura districts.

After prolonged arguments and hearings NGT had pronounced its judgment rejecting the prayer of the appellant for quashing the order granting forest clearance for the project, he said.

    soon mangalore will b a desert with over drawing of water .Moral of the story never vote congress or bjp to power and if necessity split the votes so they may not rule in full majority. Time to bring a new party to power.

    Here in the south of the state most of the rivers are only for name sake & there are only few lakes here & there. The water from these lakes is not enough for the whole south region. So water is being diverted through canals for over 400 miles from North of the state where it snows to the South. The water melted from snow flows through the canal to the South.
    It should be fine if there is excess water in Netravati (which flows to the sea) is going to be pumped through Yettinahole project for drinking purpose,

    Has BJP done any good developmental work for comman man nor have they voted and allowed for any good work for the comman man while languishing most of the time in the opposition?????. This was the primary set back for congress for development of India.

    River diversion projects are failures in many of russia,europe and russia.
    Its death knell for for the biodiversity of the western ghats and ground water table which could impact the way we live our lives in the coastal districts .. The karnataka govt wanted to do similar diversion fora river which is flowing into Goa from the western ghats .. but had to pause it since Goa being a separate state knocked the doors of the court at the govt level.Hence it had more weightage .
    Unless the people of Coastal districts including northern kasargod districts demand a separate state ,we are likely to be exploited by the bangalore/mysore centric administration which has done grave injustice to the people of coastal districts.
    The politicians have successfully divided the people of coastal karnataka in communal lines and finds it easier to force their agenda since they are sure that we wont fight back.

    If we look at the size of the pipes, question comes, whether there is so much water over yettinahole?
    built-up reservoir may go dry within half an hour if in-flow is low
