Mangaluru: Sale of ganja - two accused get jail sentence, fine

Mangaluru, Sep 13: After finding that the allegation of ganja sale levelled against two persons has been proved, the chief district and sessions court delivered a judgement on Tuesday September 12, sentencing them to 18 months of rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 20,000 each.

The accused who were found guilty are Farooq (48), resident of Ansari Cross Road at Bunder here, and Muhammed Iqbal (34), resident of Casba Bengre. The other two accused, Goods Rahim alias Kandi Rahim, who was named as first accused, and fourth accused, Abdul Rahim alias Ankush Rahim, have been acquitted. It is said that the accused used to bring ganja from Mysuru and sell the same here in small sachets.

On the basis of reliable information, Bunder station inspector, Shantaram, and team had raided a house where the raiding party found 2.380 kg ganja that was found packed, packer machine, cash, small plastic sachet for packing ganja, hammer, scissors and motor bikes used for bringing ganja, all of which were confiscated. Farooq and Muhammed Iqbal, who were found to be packing ganja in the house, were taken into custody while the other accused succeeded in fleeing.

Bunder police sub-inspector of police, Madan M C, had filed charge sheet. Judge of the court and designated special judge for offences under Narcotic Drugs Act who heard the case and listened to arguments from both sides, imposed sentences and fine as above. In case they fail to pay fine, they will have to undergo 40 additional days of simple imprisonment.

Public prosecutor, K Pushparaj Adyantaya, had appeared in this case on behalf of the prosecution.
