Mangaluru, Jul 19: Prisoners partying inside the city jail has become an issue since Tuesday in social media after photos went viral.
The episode shows that Mangaluru does not lag behind in prison matters after the news of AIDMK (Amma) leader Sasikala Natarajan allegedly getting preferential treatment at Parappana Agrahara jail in Bengaluru had become sensational recently.
Though getting outside food at the Mangaluru jail is not new, partying openly and photographing it, is a new development. It is believed that the food and liquor were brought with the help of jail authorities for this particular party.
Smuggling unauthorized goods inside Mangaluru jail including ganja, liquor and cigarettes, has been going on for many years. But jail authorities have always denied these charges, claiming them as just rumours. Whenever some goods were caught by them, they claimed that every time an attempt is made to smuggle goods inside, it was stopped. But the present photo circulated in social media gives a different picture altogether.
It is being discussed that the photos were taken by one of the prisoners and with the full knowledge of the people partying there. The intention to send them to others through social media was planned, some people say.
Mangaluru jail has seen many jailbreaks in the past. Twin murder of inmates also took place here in 2015. After complaints of security lapse, KISF service was introduced outside the gates.
The jail presently hosts a prisoner population of 425. It is said that the jail faces a shortage of twenty staff while the government rules say 40 staff are required for 250 inmates. 50 KISF personnel were supposed to guard the jail while only 24 are on payroll and only 18 of them are on duty presently.
Photo of alleged birthday party in Belagavi jail
Meanwhile a photo of a birthday party held inside Belagavi jail is also being circulated. But jail authorities said it is not a genuine photo.
