Panjim, Apr 29: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)-led Shiksha Bachao Andolan has said that government can alter sex education syllabus into health education and impart disease related education rather than harping unnecessary on sex.
 
"We agree that dieseases like HIV-AIDS is a major problem in the country but there are other serious diseases like tuberculosis about which the students can be educated," Shiksha Bachao Andolan's national joint coordinator Atul Kothari told reporters here.
 
Sex education in the schools has kicked off a major row in the country with around eleven states refusing to introduce the topic in their syllabus.
 
"Earlier sex education was imparted within the family. The parents should be educated to personally guide the students. If there are any specific requirements, the students can be personally guided," Kothari said.
 
He said that andolan, which was conceived in JUly 2004 has already deliberated on this issue and has given a provisional syllabus to the union government which can be introduced as `health education.'
 
"If we really need to educate students on sex, we can introduce topic like know your body which can be a part of overall syllabus," Kothari suggested.
 
Citing that western countries have shelved their sex education syllabus after the surveys, Kothari quoted a finding in America which says that sex education is nothing but waste of money.
 
The westerners has said that there should be elaborate discussion on the topic, he added.
 
Abhiyan feels that the education should be value oriented which can solve the major worries. "We have also see the reasons behind such evils. We need to filter the serials, advertisements, films and other material which promotes evil behaviour," Kothari said.
