Bengaluru, Jul 18 (DHNS): As news of the transfers of senior prison officials H N Sathyanarayana Rao and D Roopa spread among inmates on Monday, the Parappana Agrahara jail witnessed unrest.
Prisoners raised slogans against the government. They wanted to know why chief jail superintendent Krishna Kumar was still in his position when Roopa, who had filed a report alleging irregularities by him, had been shunted out.
The prisoners were also irked at learning about 30 of their co-prisoners being taken away to different jails in the state.
They were furious when they heard Krishna Kumar and some other jail staff had battered prisoners who had submitted information on prison irregularities to Roopa.
Prison sources said the prisoners taken away from Bengaluru had been assaulted by jailers at the behest of Krishna Kumar. As the protests grew louder, the home department issued a transfer order for Krishna Kumar as well.
Retired IAS officer Vinay Kumar will begin his inquiry into Roopa’s allegations of irregularities at the Parappana Agrahara Central prisons on Tuesday. On Monday, he met the home secretary, who briefed him about the fracas between two senior prison officials.
Sources said everything at Parappana Agrahara is now going according to the jail manual.
That includes restrictions on the frequency and duration of visits by outsiders. It is highly unlikely Vinay Kumar will find any evidence of irregularities listed by DIG D Roopa, sources said.
