Udupi: Mass suicide by Padubelle family - Financial issues most likely reason

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 16: District superintendent of police, K T Balakrishna, is leading an investigation undertaken by Shirva police about mass suicide by all four members of a goldsmith's family at Padubelle near Shirva on Thursday morning.

The police have undertaken detailed inspection of Shankaracharya's house and jewellery store that have been taken into possession by them for investigation. Their investigation is moving ahead from different angles, and documents relating to bank transactions, account books of the shop and other papers are being verified to conclude the reason which prompted Acharya to kill himself and other family members.

The police who have verified calls made by Acharya's cellphone reportedly found that he had sought loans from a few people to conduct elder daughter's marriage on September 3, and a few had promised to lend to him before that date. He had raised finance from chit fund and borrowed at high rate of interest to pay college fees of younger daughter. Mounting debt mismatched by dwindling income perhaps was playing on his mind and he would have been in a quandary over performing the marriage of his daughter by spending heavily, it is being thought. He perhaps decided to feed cyanide to family members too because his love and care for them as his death would have made them to face insult and bleak future.

People have been discussing many theories about these deaths and one hopes that police will be able to find out the exact reason for this mass suicide that has shocked the region. Shirva police station house officer Narasimha Shetty, under the guidance of Kaup police circle inspector, Halamurthy Rao, is investigating the case.

Cooperative banks r a hot bed of corruption; recently one pretty famous 'Kapol coop bank' went into trouble!!

If what has happened in this case is true, the police should get deeper n go ahead and press for a forensic audit of this bank's accounts n I am sure many other such frauds will surface!!

You want police to order "forensic audit" of a co-operative bank? Anything else in your wishlist?

Do you honestly think the local police have the competence or time to review the financial transaction of a co-operative bank? It is the job of the Registrar of Societies and not the police.

If now the bank claims that gold is fake then definitely the valuer n the bankers who sanctioned such a big amount r also involved!! Something might have happened between them n they might have fallen out on the issue!!

Nowadays many cases r cropping up where bankers r hand in glove with fraudsters!
Yesterday a gang of 3 was apprehended in Bangalore who were cloning credit cards since 8 years n the siphoned of money could be over 100 crores, n this was done in collusion with numerous businessmen who allowed them to swipe cards at their POS swiping machines for a hefty commission with the knowledge of bankers, it was a money spinning biz for all involved, these guys too were leading super luxurious lives with each having multiple girl friends!! This is the sorry state of affairs today, wherein top level bankers too not hesitate to join hands with criminals to get rich fast!!

Was the Bank people sleeping when he pledged artificial jewellery not for a few thousands but for 60 lakhs. The manager or whoever was responsible to sanction this loan must be taken to task .This is not a small amount. Because I have taken gold loan. And it was strictly monitored. Of course it was for a few thousands of rupees and and not half a crore. This will be possible without the cooperation from the bank officials. I am sorry that this family had to commit suicide because of the negligence of the concerned bank staff.

All are involved..... When they approve any loan, the Bank official must check the mortgaged item. Our Nationalised banks give huge loans to the people on the recommendation of politicians, or other higher authorities. i.e. Bhusan steel, Esser group, Mallya etc if all banks allowed loans on proper mortgage property than how Indian Banks are burden with Non performing assets????? Now this bank will blame the dead man..... Just like Banks are blaming Mallya..... How the loans were allowed and which bank officials approved the loan???? check and punish them.

One of the other problem for this Jeweller to end life is the social menace called 'Dowry'.
As his elder daughter is engaged and all set for marriage. The business losses and mounting additional responsibilities must have forced them for suicide pact.
I would also say honest business practices will never lose the trust of his customers. But in our undivided Canara many jewellers are practicing fraud giving them substandard gold in exchange. In my own experience a decade earlier I wanted to exchange gold, I was surprised to know from jeweler in Middle East that gave me quality of 18 Carat which I had paid for 22 Carat. I never went to that jeweller again and I told everyone whom I knew not by from that jeweller.

There are so many families live who live below the poverty line and sustain life and hardships. First people need to maintain simplicity and adjust life according to means or earnings. Poverty may bring some hardships but taking others life like this is un ethical. Such a beautiful family... It should not happen with anybody....Shankarachrya should have discussed his financial problems with his brother, mother and relatives and atleast they would have tried to help to perform his daughter's marriage. Now a days people are becoming too selfish and busy in competing others and they are dumb to listen any others problems...May God forgive the head of the family and grant them eternal peace.

That is the problem, people have become very materialistic. Some two days back, there was news about, employees from IT industry, who r planning to take out a protest march against layoffs. In Pune, itself one Mr Gowda a software professional ended his life by leaving a note, "that there was no job security in IT sector, and he had become depressed due to work pressure too". Youth of today, who go in for higher education spend lavishly, without thinking about saving or situations that would arise later on. And once they are removed from job, all that lavish lifestyle comes to a naught. They cannot face the real harsh world. So forget love. Love is only money today. I feel sad for the above family. God give peace to their souls.

In the hours and minutes leading up to the physical act of committing suicide, do you think the brain would function rationally? Do you even know what goes on inside his mind?
If t he brain had the capacity to function rationally and logically, he should have taken a very high value life insurance; live out the minimum suicide exclusion period and then book a room in a hotel and consume cyanide.
