Mangaluru: First ever e-toilets of DK to be operational from Jul 11

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jul 10: The first ever e-toilets in Dakshina Kannada district will become operational in the city on Tuesday July 11. Five e-toilets set up at important junctions here will be inaugurated on Tuesday.

These toilets, made of stainless steel and mounted on concrete bases, have already been stationed at the pre-determined spots. Providing electricity, water and underground drainage connections is in final stages.

Two of these toilets, one for men and the other for women, have been stationed at Lalbagh bus stand. Two more are at Kadri Park, with the other one at Hampankatta. Such e-toilets are already functioning at cities like Bengaluru and Mysuru apart from several centres in Kerala.

Each of these toilets cost Rs 6.25 lac, and have been built under the sponsorship of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd under the corporate social responsibility fund. As these toilets are portable, they can be easily shifted elsewhere depending on the need. The toilets have GPS connection and hence in case of any problems, the central office of the company get information, after which engineers will be dispatched to attend to the problem. The toilets can be operated by placing coins in the slots provided and the mechanism is equipped with the capacity to identify fake coins. Automatic flushing is provided and the people have the facility to wash their hands outside.

Each of these toilets are provided with tanks that can hold water up to 300 litres. After ten persons use the toilet, the toilet automatically gets cleaned. The toilet uses 1.5 litres of water if people use it for up to three minutes, and 4.5 litres if the time taken is over three minutes.

More such toilets are planned to be set up near PVS Circle, Pumpwell, University College, Nanthur, Kadri Market, fish market near State Bank, and Forum Mall. Before stationing more e-toilets in the city, the city corporation wants to study the response of the people and their experience with the ones currently installed.

I agree with Jennifer's comments on civic responsibility and hygiene - they must not have to be taught by the PM. Imagine in a any other country, where a President Trump or Theresa May have extol on the virtues of personal hygiene to its citizens. Unthinkable! We can tolerate our lack of it with humor. I don't see change coming any time soon in a massive way where 60% of the population do it in public. How's that for entering the Guinness Book of Records for achievement??
I will share a humorous anecdote:
I was visiting Modiji's Gujarat on a business trip; Gandhi Nagar where I see a bunch of people lined up you know doing what against a wall which warned against exactly that. Concerned that they would be aghast or worse take pictures to upload, I diverted their attention to the other side of the car, where luckily we could see a camel casually strolling on the street - well, lesser of the two evils, right?
The article says "The toilet uses 1.5 litres of water if people use it for up to three minutes, and 4.5 litres if the time taken is over three minutes" Wow, they figure that the 4.5 minute user will do a big job and mess up the toilet - so use more water. Smart!

We can introduce e-toilets or build modern toilets but cannot expect hygene surroundings from all the users. Such awareness comes only through right guidance and self concience and our responsiblity towards hygene. The worst is Air travel and use of toilets. Either we have empty the bowles before starting our jouney or abstain from fill our stomoch. Even sometimes in the offices we can notice such carelessness or negligence.!

Good move by the government.. I only hope people will be able to use it properly. And I hope urinating anywhere in the city will stop.. It's disgusting to see men urinating.. These things happen only in our country.. Now that we have e-toilets people who urinate should be fined. Keep our city clean and our country clean. When we go abroad how we enjoy the place and appreciate the cleanliness, let the tourist who come to our country also appreciate our country.

Clean public toilets is need of the hour. Specially people who have some health issue and can't go to unhygienic toilets it us very difficult to go out of the house. Here in gulf we dont have public toilets but shopping malls with hitech equipments everywhere.

Illegal activities may increase. There will not be any business for lodges. Better to keep a security or CCTV.when we pay for this keep enough stock of tissues. Bcoz we should follow and we are following westerners. After work done just wipe with tissues.

Public toilet is of big concern in India. They are as below

    1. They are only few public toilets.
    2. Public toilets are stinking and unhygienic.
    3. Most people who use public toilet only think about themselves and leave it in a very bad state for use of others.
    4. Water is not clean at all.

We should spread more awareness so that we keep them clean!

Is it not a shame that we are taught about personal hygienic matters and methods about relieving ourselves, publicly ? We are used to relieve on an open ground hence even if we enter a toilet we spray/splatter our discharge around, outside the commode space. That makes our toilets to stink to no end, throughout the day. One can sense the existence of toilets from several meters away. I have seen tourists who want to use toilets in Indian airports, storm out unable to stand on the wet/soiled floor.

How long will it take us to be equivalent to the rest of the world ? Did we want a PM to teach about personal hygiene during his Independence day speech ? Could we not learn about it from the developed world already ? And, look at us - we are so much boasting about morals, ethics, values - Huh !

    Jenifer,
I have a better idea for stinking toilets, The flush handle should be outside of the toilets, once the person comes out of the toilet will have to use the handle to flush water, flush shouldn't be limited to only commode rather whole toilet from top to bottom. Obviously will waste more water. But, do we have a choice?

    @ Jennifer,

    Very true!!
One can easily find people(including cooks/food handlers/cashiers/sales persons/workers/medical staff) who do not wash their hands, even after using the toilet.

Are Indians becoming too busy with protecting religion, language, cows, superstitions, etc.?
