Kundapur, Jun 22: A few days ago, a person had been knocked down by a vehicle opposite Kamath Petrol Bunk at Koteshwar near here. The killer vehicle had fled after the accident which happened in the early hours. As more vehicles moved over his body thereafter, the body had been mutilated and torn into pieces. The police from the town have since succeeded in establishing the identity of the person.
The victim was Umesh Basappa Hanchinal from Dharwad district. The body was identified on the basis of SIM card found in the shirt pocket of the deceased. As the body of the victim had been crushed beyond recognition and the clothes had become wet due to rain, it had become impossible to establish his identity. The traffic police had taken the things found at the spot into possession. After the clothes worn by the victim were dried, the police found a SIM card inside the pocket, which helped to establish his identity.
Father of the deceased informed the police that Umesh used to work as a lorry driver. "My son had left home last month, telling that he was leaving for Kundapur on driving assignment. On June 1, he called from another number and told us that his cellphone had developed problems. Thereafter, we called his cellphone many a time but he could not be contacted. He was addicted to drinking and whenever he left for driving work, usually he did not return for a month or so," he confessed to the police here.
The family members have taken into custody the mortal remains of the deceased. They said they propose to perform funeral here.
