Udupi, Jun 17: The police have arrested one person in the accident case that took the life of 17-year-old Ashmita, a student of MGM College.
Ashmita, who was seriously injured after a speeding car rammed into her on Thursday, June 15 succumbed to her injuries on Saturday, June 17.
She was standing on the divider to cross the road in front of Kaveri Ford, Kinnimulki on Thursday evening after finishing her classes as usual, when the car hit her.
The arrested person, identified as Korangarapadi resident Pareekshith Shetty, was driving a Swift D'Zire belonging to Hotel Ocean Pearl, with Delhi registration number, at a high speed.

As Ashmita had expressed her desire to donate her organs after her death, her parents informed about it to the doctors. However only her eyes could be donated. Her last rites were held on Saturday evening.
Ashmita’s uncle Shivaram speaking to daijiworld said that her parents are not in a position to speak now as they are in a state of shock. He urged that the driver who caused her death be severely punished.
As Ashmita was a student of MGM College, the college principal declared a holiday on Saturday as a mark of respect.
Ashmita was a talented student and had secured 96% marks in SSLC. She aspired to become a lawyer.

Udupi, Jun 17: A college student, who suffered grievous injuries after a car hit her at high speed, breathed her last at KMC Hospital Manipal on Saturday June 17 morning.
Ashmita Suvarna, resident of Ambalpady here and a first PU student of MGM College in the city, was waiting on the divider on national highway 66 near Cauvery Ford showroom at Kinnimulky here on the evening of Thursday Jun 16 evening when going home after her classes, when tragedy struck.
A Swift D'Zire car bearing New Delhi registration number that was moving towards Mangaluru came at high speed and hit the girl student who was standing over the divider. Ashmita, who sustained very serious injuries in the accident, was admitted into KMC Hospital at Manipal immediately.
In this accident, a motor bike rider who was very close in front of the car, had providential escape, as the car, after hitting the girl student, stopped after hitting the divider just short of the motor bike.
The doctors who observed that Ashmita had suffered internal injuries in her head and also back, put in their best efforts to save her. But she lost her battle for life today morning.
The police have observed reckless driving of the car driver through footage of the CCTV camera at the spot. A case stands registered in traffic police station here relating to the accident.
Ashmita was a bright student, a topper who had scored 96 percent in SSLC. Daughter of Ashok Anchan and Suneeta, residents of Ambalpady, Ashmita was pursuing first year PU science at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Pre-University College. In her last class essay on the topic of 'My ambition', she had stated that it was her dream to become a lawyer, but she had chosen science in PU on her parents' advice and because she would get to learn new things. In the essay, she had asserted that despite choosing science, she was determined to fulfil her goal of becoming a lawyer.
Organs donated
Soon after she was declared dead, in a heart-warming gesture, Ashmita's parents donated her eyes. The decision was taken as Ashmita had once told her mother that she wanted to donate her organs, having been inspired by a blood donation camp that she had attended.
