Abu Dhabi, Jun 15: In yet another gesture that proves why the UAE is a symbol of peace and tolerance, the ruler of Abu Dhabi has decided to change the name of a mosque to that denoting Mary and Jesus.
According to a report by Gulf News, on World Humanitarian Day Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces, has ordered to change the name of Mohammad Bin Zayed mosque in al-Mushrif area area to 'Mary, Jesus' Mother', or in Arabic, 'Mariam, Umm Eisa' mosque.
The name has been changed to "affirm the humanitarian values in religion, tolerance and co-existence of civilisations and common denominations between religions".
Emirates news agency WAM reported that the name has been changed to "promote the social connections between the followers of different religions and strengthen the common characteristics between the divine religions".
Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, minister of state for tolerance, expressed her appreciation of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed's his wise directions to implement this initiative, which she said reflects his pure humanity and portrays a bright image of the real tolerance and coexistence in the UAE.
She also noted that the mosque is located in a place that reflects the values of tolerance, brotherhood and co-existence, as this location includes many civilised places of worship, reflecting the mission of tolerance of the UAE’s leadership, government and people, WAM reported.
