Kundapur, Jun 12: Incessant rain that has been lashing the taluk since Saturday June 10 night has inflicted heavy loss. Reports are coming in from various places about havoc wreaked by incessant rainfall.
Huge fissures have appeared on national highway 66 stretch at picturesque Maravanthe where the road is flanked by sea on side and river on the other. The deep cracks on the road have lined up on the side of the road adjacent to the river for a distance of over a hundred metres.
The Gangolli police have placed barricades all along this stretch as a precautionary measures and erected road signs asking road users to move to the other side of the road. However, the cracks have been widening and growing in length with each passing day, creating worries about the safety of the highway stretch.
A well belonging to Raghavendra located adjacent to his house at Barekattu within the local municipal limits has vanished into the earth along with its protective wall. A house owned by Jacinta D'Souza in Anagalli village nearby has crashed to the ground. Loss of over two lac rupees has been estimated due to this incident.
The stacking of sand for widening of national highway near Sangam area in the town has given rise to artificial flood in Herikudru isle nearby as the heap of sand is blocking movement of water. Water has entered over 40 houses at Herikudru and agricultural land apart from coconut plantations have gone under water. Several stretches of the national highway have been inundated in standing water, creating problems for the vehicle users.
