Kundapur: Highway develops cracks at Maravanthe, well gets buried

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Jun 12: Incessant rain that has been lashing the taluk since Saturday June 10 night has inflicted heavy loss. Reports are coming in from various places about havoc wreaked by incessant rainfall.

Huge fissures have appeared on national highway 66 stretch at picturesque Maravanthe where the road is flanked by sea on side and river on the other. The deep cracks on the road have lined up on the side of the road adjacent to the river for a distance of over a hundred metres.

The Gangolli police have placed barricades all along this stretch as a precautionary measures and erected road signs asking road users to move to the other side of the road. However, the cracks have been widening and growing in length with each passing day, creating worries about the safety of the highway stretch.

A well belonging to Raghavendra located adjacent to his house at Barekattu within the local municipal limits has vanished into the earth along with its protective wall. A house owned by Jacinta D'Souza in Anagalli village nearby has crashed to the ground. Loss of over two lac rupees has been estimated due to this incident.

The stacking of sand for widening of national highway near Sangam area in the town has given rise to artificial flood in Herikudru isle nearby as the heap of sand is blocking movement of water. Water has entered over 40 houses at Herikudru and agricultural land apart from coconut plantations have gone under water. Several stretches of the national highway have been inundated in standing water, creating problems for the vehicle users.

When we have concrete roads digged next day of inauguration for installing pipelines, drainage, cabling, step by step, one at a time, you can then understand the way all the development is going in whose name and where.

The road next to any sea-shore largely in India are in great danger, because of raising sea level. They are bound to vanish if there are no secure, massive stone laid structures to protect them or alternatively mangrove to beat sea-erosion.

Haven't seen any policy decision from Modi Govt., to deal with this concern todate. Maybe, close to election in 2019, there could be some chest thumping.

It has become a fashion for all to blame Modi and expect Modi to create magic and solve India's problems in 3 years after assuming office. One should not forget that most of Independent India was ruled by Congress and Karnataka, in particular, had always Congress governments except last one full term ruled by BJP. The question here is what did previous Congress governments do and particular MPs and MLAs of congress elected representatives from Mangalore and Udupi to solve this issue?

States are collecting tax and where is the money going? To fund shaadi bhagya? Modi is far better PM than anyone so far and one who is doing his service selflessly and at least one should appreciate than rather than being critical of everything Modi does.

Sub-standard work. haven't seen any quality control test/measures being carried out, which is a very common sight when one drive along the highway under construction. Central Government needs to focus on quality aspect not just target km completion per day...

as some one highlighted, this is purely due to the ignorance of the contractor. I am sure he must have put all the obstacles on this construction to make a huge bill. But looks all diverted to his personal account and road has ben constructed with a bare minimum budget. Now it's a pay back time... he need to reconstruct the road, with out any cost. I am sure there should be a penalty clause on the contract.
Penalize him. No need of any reference to central givt, Ghadgari and all here. Make contractor to rebuilt the road.... that's the only way.

Dial Gadkari as he is in charge of highways. Bad work from IRB. People lost lives due to their bad construction in Karwar. God only knows whether kickbacks are paid to get contract.

Why go so far. look at roads from Surathkal to Pumpwell. Full of potholes within a week. it a toll road and cars use this paying 70 rupees per day?

Union govt claims that they are building 30 kms or what ever number of roads per day. but here existing incomplete toll road is full of potholes. Staunch modi supporters should at least write to Gadkari and Modi about plight of these roads, get it repaired to prove that current Union govt indeed can do something for citizens.

instead they will argue here and max they will do is dislike this comment

As national highway comes under Central Government, can our elected member Shobha Karandlaje take initiative to name and shame the contractors (If this was contractors mistake) and inform Govt to impose ban in bidding Govt. contracts. This will enlighten other contractors also.

The contractor to whom this job was given previously has done a bad job. He needs to redo this at this own expense, as he has used cheap quality products and made huge profits.
