UAE bans people from showing sympathy for Qatar, warns of strict action

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai

Dubai, Jun 7: Following the severing of ties with Qatar, the UAE attorney general has warned citizens against showing any kind of sympathy for Qatar on social media or any other means.

In a statement to the media on Wednesday June 7, attorney general Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi said that showing sympathy for Qatar in any form is punishable by law.

Dr Shamsi said that the UAE has taken a firm stand against Qatar over its hostile policies against the other GCC and Middle East countries, adding that the decision was taken in the interest of UAE's national security and its people.

"Strict and tough action will be taken against anyone who shows sympathy or any form of favouritism towards Qatar, or against anyone who objects to the position of the UAE, whether through social media, or any other forms of communication," media reports quoted Dr Shamsi.

Violation of the order would attract jail term of three to 15 years and fine of not less than Dh 500,000, under the provisions of Federal Penal Code and the federal law on Combating Information Technology Crimes.

The UAE, along with several other powerful Arab states including Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, severed diplomatic ties with Qatar on Monday over its alleged support to terror groups and Iran. Qatar has denied the accusations, terming the action 'unjustified'.

Stretching from nowhere to nowhere without any reference to the context. Just shutting opponents mouth by falsely accusing against the military. This is BJP way of running the govt. Can you find any single non BJP Indian who critises Indian military. None. But BJP is destroying soldiers by poor quality food and not equipping them fully and not giving them enough power to deal with terrorists for fear of losing power. It is shear abusing of soldiers by BJP.

    Dear Shettre,
First of all pls learn and define the difference between monarchy and democracy where as UAE under monarchy and we India is (so called) democracy. About strictly implementing rules of both system is depend on country where as UAE has very tight law for all under one umbrella and India has different law for each clan, sector, religion, rich, poor etc etc. So let's decide where and what went wrong with our system instead of blaming others.

In India you cannot speak anything about Narendra Modi. But you are free to crack any jokes on Manmohan Singh. This is the difference. Those who talk against Modi are imprisoned and subjected to CBI raids.

Can you elaborate why Indian government impose food habits on it's people? In UAE, I believe there are no restrictions on food or alchoholic drinks. Though it's forbidden in Islam to have alchohol, UAE government has not banned the same for other people. What do you say Mr. Shetty??? However in India, it's government of India decides what to eat and what to drink.

When we read news like these, we realize the value of living in a democratic country. And why we have to strive to keep it that way.

At least here, we are not put into jail or fined for showing sympathy or criticizing the government. The most that happens is some fringe group nutjobs calling us anti-nationals.

You're still allowed to make the above comment without any law preventing you from doing so. That's my point.J
Of course, nowadays, we feel our freedom is threatened which we should be fighting against.
The sad part, however, is that people do not realize the importance of freedom of speech (as evident by some of the comments posted here).
