Kundapur: No doctors - Pregnant woman sent back by govt hospital, forced to plead for lift

Kundapur, Jun 5: In a distressing incident, the taluk government hospital here allegedly sent back a heavily pregnant woman who was experiencing labour pains, apparently as there were no doctors to examine her. The anguished parents of the woman later filed a complaint with the Kundapur Mahila Santwana Kendra.

Asha, wife of Koni resident Santhosh, had gone to the government hospital from her mother’s house after she started experiencing labour pains. Arathi, the doctor in the hospital had gone home as her duty hours had ended. Asha reached the hospital at around midnight on Sunday June 4. Vinaya and Shanthi, nurses in the hospital told Asha that she would not be delivering for another two days, and as there were no doctors around, asked her to go to Udupi.

Asha’s aunt then called up Asha's doctor Chandrashekar, but he reportedly told her that he could not see Asha as he was on leave, and asked her aunt to take Asha to Udupi. He asked the nurses at the hospital to make arrangements to shift Asha to Udupi immediately. The nurses in turn told Asha and her aunt to call 108 ambulance.

However, though Asha's aunt called the government-run 108 ambulance several times, there was no response. As nobody picked the call after several attempts, Asha and her aunt again pleaded with the nurses to get an ambulance for them. But the staff allegedly refused.

It was midnight and raining heavily. Having no vehicle to take Asha to another hospital, her aunt requested passing vehicles to help her take her to hospital. After a long time, finally, Praveen, an auto driver stopped, despite having passengers in his auto. When he listened to the trouble the women were in, he asked his passengers to get down and took the distressed women to a private hospital in Kundapur.

Just 10 minutes after getting admitted to the private hospital, Asha gave birth to a girl.

Asha's aunt and uncle have complained about the matter to Kundapur Mahila Santwana Kendra urging to ensure that such incidents do not recur. President of Santwana Kendra, Radhadas has submitted a written complaint to taluk medical officer Udayashanker, who assured of disciplinary action if the complaint was proved.

There have been similar complaints reportedly in social websites that patients are being sent back due to unavailibility of doctors and amenities in hospitals.

Speaking to daijiworld later, Asha spoke about the apathy she had face at the hands of the government hospital nurses, who told her that they were not responsible if the 108 ambulance did not respond. "Would they have said that if this had happened to their family member?" she said.

In India there is unequal distribution of health care. Doctors do not work in rural area and the result is scarcity of Doctors in periphery. Private care mushrooming in cities and their aim obviously is to make money not to serve people. Time we change this scenario. Health must be available and it must be given free in all goverment hospitals. Unless we ensure that poor people get health care the principles of democracy is at stake. Affordable care for all must be the motto of our system. I am really upset at what happend at Kundapur Hospital. A poor woman in labour was not only rejected by the Hospital where two Gynaecologists were working but also denied ambulance facility by the authorities. Moreover the woman was made to travel in a Autorikshaw with labour pains and was forced to deliver in a private hospital where the cost of treatment is very high. In private hospital the treatment cost is very high nowadays. I feel sad at the turn of events that happend at Kundpaur. Time we nationalise the health system in India and make treatment affordable to all. I am really upset and I am feeling very sad. The goverment must pay the charges for the treatment that woman had to pay in the Hospital. Health is a human fundemental right and it must be respected. Goverment must provide free affordable health care for all. Doctors who were present at the Hospital must have made sure that some one was available for treatment in the Hospital. This is a tragedy and I want the goverment to take adequate action against the people who are guilty here. My heart aches when I think of what this woman had undergone in the hospital. She was in pain she went to the Hospital where the authorities not only denied her treatment but even they could not arrange and ambulance to shift her. Whats happenings in our nation? Where are our moral values? When did we become so unkind? High time the public request the goverment to make that all goverment hospitals have staff and 24 hour facilities !

In this case my hats off to Praveen, the auto driver who took the pregnant woman at the nick of time to the nearest hospital whereby the woman delivered a baby girl. But I envy on the doctor as well as the nurse who refused to take care of the situation of the woman who was going through all this.

The pregnant lady was asked to go to Udupi hospital which was almost 30 kilometers away. The 108 service which was supposed to help was not available! Sad state of affairs. The government must conduct an inquiry and the guilty must be punished No excuse for this kind of gross inhumane behavior. People pay taxes and its the duty of the government to provide health care.

I wish the guilty must be brought to justice. This lady had to depend on private care in Kundpaur where the treatment nowadays is so costly.

What will poor people do if they have to depend on costly private health care! I also sometimes forced to think that people depend on costly private hospitals at Kundapur because the government services are so inefficient.

Private health care is expensive and Gordian people find it hard to go private care at Kundapura mainly because of the cost involved.

I feel the government must bear the expenses of this lady incurred at the private hospital because its the responsibility of the government to make sure that the lady received good are at government hospital. I really feel sad for the poor lady who suffered so much because no Doctor was available.

If Doctors are on leave they must make sure there is an alternative available. Sadly here both Gynecologists left leaving the patients life in danger. Luckily she could deliver safe at a private hospital where I am sure the treatment might cost a more. I am of the opinion that government authorities must make sure all her bills in the private hospital must be paid by the Government. Because of the fault of government hospital here this lady had to depend on private care which is costly. Everyone knows how private hospitals charge .

Its sad in this era of modern medicine a pregnant woman had to suffer like this. She was in labour pains refused admission in a taluka hopsital because there is no doctor available there. She was refused transport too, Luckily a good autorikshaw person took her to private hospital where she delivered. Sad state of affairs. The goverment must answer. The goverment hasa responsibility. Hope such a sictuation never happens again in India. I am feeling terribly angry at the events that happend.

This is because..population is huge ...and ratio of doctors is less...and even those less doctors are scared to handle complicated cases in periphery...due to assaults..this is just the beggining..will be worse in future

Here there was no Doctor! Doctor was not even present to handle the case! Sad indeed. I agree Doctors are nowadays very scared to handle cases because if they make mistakes they get thrashed and attacked by the public.

But here no one was available. All doctors were away . They always take fat salary from the Goverment but was not all available here to treat a woman who was in labour pains.

The lady had to run to a private hopsital in autorikshaw and undergo the costly treatment at a private hospital.

And the 108 ambulance was also not available. So there multiple deficiencies here Doctor,Ambulance nothing was available in the hour of need.

Let the people involved in this incident answer. Public wants to know. They must give an answer, I have no symphathies with the people here.

Again, I repeat health care being an essential sector is ignored by Govt. This is not an one off incident. Several such incidents happen due to lack of facilities, doctor, sometime negligence etc. It is difficult to imagine the situation in rural areas where there is no proper transport facilities also. What will the people do?

We collect huge money through taxes but essential sectors like health care, drinking water are really neglected.

    Very unfortunate for the lady...
However thanks to God that all is well....
Relationship between patient and hospital is never hospitable one...
Normally critical care staff are hardened humans...
They usually would have lost all human aspects...
There is nothing anyone can do about it...
    Avaravara lucky chance.....

Where are the doctor's who went on a strike recently? I know that not all doctor's and nurse's are the same, but, majority of them have lost humanity in them. What is something went wrong to the mother and child? It is only God who protected this lady and her baby.
Doctor's like these should be dismissed from their field as they are not fit. How can a doctor give a reason that he is on leave when the patient is having labour pain? A lot of comment's were posted by the PG doctor's and medical student's saying that the life of a patient is not in their hands. Yes. True. Life of a patient is not in your hands. But when a situation is in your hand, you doctor's do not want to take the responsibility!!! Come on now. Speak up!!!
