Beltangady, Jun 2: A man was brutally hacked to death on the night of Friday June 2 at his residence near Santhekatte here.
Thimmppa Poojary (52), a native of Moodigere residing in a rented house at Santhekatte here, was murdered allegedly by a student identified as Chandrashekar (20).
Thimmappa was a lineman working with BSNL. He is survived by wife Champavati, son Hrishit (12) and daughter Tanvi (9).
The accused, Chandrashekar is a student staying with his mother in a rented house adjacent to Thimmappa's residence. He is pursuing BBM second year at SDM College, Ujire.
On Friday at around 8 pm, Thimmappa was going home after work, when Chandrashekar reportedly waylaid him and a quarrel ensued between them over some issue. Chandrashekar then allegedly wielded a sickle and brutally hacked Thimmappa to death.
Thimmappa and Chandrashekar's residences are located in the same building. It said that the issue of water sharing had become a matter of dispute between them. It is also suspected that there were other reasons that had made Chandrashekar uneasy, and unable to tolerate Thimmappa any longer, he allegedly committed the heinous act.
The Beltangady police have arrested Chandrashekar. The exact motive behind the crime would become clearer after investigation, said the police.
SP Bhushan Gulabrao Borase and other police officials visited the spot.
Locals said that a little while before the murder took place, Chandrashekar went to a nearby bakery and bought some bread. Saying that his mother was not at home, he stood around waiting, knowing that Thimmappa would be passing by that way.
