Mangaluru, May 29: The state government on Monday May 29 cancelled the appointment of IPS officer Satheesh Kumar to the post of police commissioner of Mangaluru city, and appointed IPS officer T R Suresh to the post.
Satheesh Kumar had been appointed as police commssioner of Mangaluru city commissionerate on May 25, in place of Chandra Sekhar who was transferred as IGP of CID and economic offences, Bengaluru.
However, Satheesh Kumar's appointment was opposed by Congress leaders from Mangaluru, led by minister U T Khader, who raised objections with the chief minister stating that Satheesh Kumar was the SP of Dakshina Kannada district during the infamous church attacks in Mangaluru in 2008, when police allegedly carried out atrocities against worshippers.
Following the complaint, the state government had withheld the order, and on Monday, cancelled it altogether.
T R Suresh, who will now be taking over as Mangaluru police commissioner, is an IPS officer of the 2003 batch. He has been serving as deputy inpector general of police (DIG), fire services, in Bengaluru, and has earlier been the DCP of Bengaluru (north division) and SP of Tumakuru.
