Mangaluru, May 26: Ramadan, the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar, will begin in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts from Saturday May 27.
Both Dakshina Kannada Qazi Twaka Ahmed Musliyar and Udupi Qazi P M Ibrahim Musliyar Bekal have declared the beginning of Ramadan.
The official announcement in Bhatkal was made by Qazi of Jamatul Muslimeen, Moulana Mulla Mohammed Iqbal Nadwi and the Qazi of Khalifa Jamatul Muslimeen, Moulana Khwaja Madani Nadwi officially declared the start of the month of Ramadan. Specials night prayers called Taraveeh began in mosques following the annoucement.
The crescent moon was sighted in northern Kerala on the evening of Friday May 26.
Ramadan in UAE, Saudi Arabia and others parts of the Gulf will also begin from May 27.
During Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, Muslims across the world fast from dawn to dusk with devotion, discipline and abstinence from not only food but also worldly pleasures. Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam.
Ramadan culminates with the celebration of Id-ul-Fitr festival.
