Udupi: Baje dam goes dry, water supply to city once in four days

Udupi, May 24: As the water stock in Baje dam is sufficient only for the next 7 days, City Municipal Council (CMS) has decided to supply water to city once in four days.

In a communication, CMS has said that there has been no proper water collection at Baje dam which supplies water to the entire city. Water was pumped through boat pumps from Shiroor, Manei Math pond and Bhandaribettu. Then it was passed to the Baje dam. This was enough only till May 23 to give a regular supply to city.

CMC president Meenakshi Madhav Bannanje and council office D Manjunathayya have asked the people to use water sparingly due to current scarcity.

35 wards have been divided into two and all these wards will get water in every 4 days according to the schedule decided by CMC.

If no water is received due to technical problems, water will be supplied to these places in tankers. One can phone 8496989248/8496989166 for this purpose.

If the region receives good rains, only then the present arrangement will change, said a CMC official.

    Hard times are faced by people in south kanara,which was not heard few years back.Now it is time to think over this by people and sametime from our panchayat or mayer too.Not at the last minute when dam is dry to think over but long before monsoon ends to save water.Everywhere in the world climate has been changed.Let us think about it and lessen our consume of diesel,elekric which makes more smog.and envirement hot.More greenary trees,.Just think what about our Ghats ?how many trees are there now?How many trees are gone to other countrys cut without notice of officers or with officers help cut paid slinently?Nature is paying us back with its own method.

    Why does your area which is known for greenery looses its greenery? Only reason I can think is teh damage to environment. We destroyed trees and we built concrete jungles and our area has become very dry. There is scarcity of water everywhere mainly because we destroyed tress. Lest take a pledge that each person in our district plant at least 5 trees in the coming rainy season. We need to preserve trees so that our children will not die of thirst. Lets work harder for betterment of our are. Pledge to plant more trees Let there be greenery and lets be responsible citizens toward environment

    Lack of planning is the reason for this situation. There are water sources which are unused. DK district has planned it better irrespective of the severe water scarcity prevailing there.

    Good people do not even think of people who are going through draughts and water scarcity!
    All the projects intended for the purpose are facing opposition from good people in the south/north.
    It's not God's wish but man made calamity due to Industries, polutants and destroying the forests and trees for residential and commercial complexes.

    A very bad state of affair. It will be a tough time for the people of Udupi if the water supply is cut down to once in four days. Water should be consumed only for the essential purpose and cut down on car washing or watering of gardens till the situation improves.

    If river water is stopped from flowing into sea the silt deposited by river water Will be held back resulting in increase in salinity, death of all fishes, rising sea level and floods due to rising river level. Do not interfere with a natural process as nature cannot be controlled.
