Bantwal, May 23: The police on Tuesday May 23 arrested three persons from Tamil Nadu who were attempting to smuggle ganja from Tamil Nadu to Karkala in Udupi district. Ganja weighing 20 kg has been seized.
The arrested are Chandrakumar alias Kumar, Shantakumar, and Tamilu Selbi alias Lakshmi, residents of Gudalur in Neelagiri district, Tamil Nadu.
Based on credible information that ganja was being transported from Madurai to Karkala, the Bantwal police led by DYDP Raveesh, DCIB inspector Amanulla and other personnel arrested the accused near Dharmasthala main entrance.
The accused were standing near the KSRTC bus stop at Dharmasthala with two sacks. On inspection of the sacks, the police found 10 packets, each containing 2 kg of ganja. The police took the accused into custody and during questioning, it was revealed that the accuse had bought the ganja at Vijaywada in Andhra Pradesh, then moved to Tamil Nadu's Gundalur, and from there towards Karkala.
Apart from the ganja, the police also confiscated three mobile phones and Rs 1,100 in cash. The seized ganja is valued at Rs 4 lac.
