Mysuru: Hot chemical waste - factories department blames land owner

Mysuru, Apr 21: Deputy director in the department of factories and boilers, D C Jagadeesh, has filed his report about the rare phenomenon of red-hot waste disposed off in a land at Shyadanahalli in Belavatta revenue division in this taluk which accounted for the death of a boy and severe burn injuries to another. Jagadeesh, who visited the spot and conducted verification, sent his report about his findings to the deputy commissioner of the district.

In his report, Jagadeesh has directly placed blame on the owner of the land concerned for allowing disposal of waste illegally in the field. He observed that no agricultural activities are being conducted in the field, which is located about 60 feet away from the road. The report points out that chemical waste was allowed to be deposited in a pit formed in the field since long. The officer also observed that chemical waste had been unscientifically disposed off at the site.

Deputy commissioner, Randeep, has said that a ten-member team formed by Karnataka State Pollution Control Board is likely to visit the spot and make an assessment during the next week.

    Instead of blaming the owner of the land what is the Factory Inspector doing to identify how waste is disposed of in the city by the factories? Do they wake up for a post-mortem report after every accident? Don't they have a responsibility to implement the factories Act and the Pollution Prevention measures that are aimed at protecting the lives of the people? Whether the landowner was aware of the waste being dumped is another point to be probed. If he has allowed charcoal to be dumped what was the reason? The Deputy Director of Department of Boilers and Factories should first be probed to find out if there was a dereliction of duty on the part of his department employees.
