Dubai, Mar 15: Defaming a popular jewelery group on social media has landed an expatriate worker from India in trouble. The man has been levied a hefty fine and might also be deported from the United Arab Emirates back to his home town.
According to a report on Malayalam Manorama, Bineesh Punnakkal Arumughan (35) from Thrissur in Kerala, was accused of spreading false reports against Malabar Gold and Diamonds. Bineesh, who was working in Sharjah has been imposed a fine of AED 250,000 by the Dubai First Instance Court. The court also ordered him to be deported back home.
A few photos with a claim that they depicted the Pakistani independence day celebration at the jeweler's branch in the Emirate spread on social media forced the India-based business house to take action. A complaint followed after which Dubai police apprehended Arumughan. It is said that Arumughan apologized for his act after which the management of Malabar Gold and Diamonds withdrew the complaint. But, the prosecution went ahead with the case as the accused had violated the law of the land. Bineesh faced various charges including the misuse of information network and information technology.
The photo which went viral on social media was actually that of celebrations at another enterprise where citizens of various countries including Pakistan worked. Malabar Gold’s logo was imprinted on the image.
