Mangalore, Mar 3: Officials and corporators should have mutual understanding among themselves, in order to ensure the efficient implementation of public work projects, opined A G Kodgi, chairman of the Third Finance Commission.

He was addressing the corporators and officials of the civic body related to the difficulties of basic amenities in the city, such as drinking water, underground drainage facility and solid waste management, at MCC auditorium, here on Monday March 3.

The water meters should be installed even to community taps in the city in order to avoid misuse of drinking water for non-domestic purposes such as watering the gardens, washing vehicles etc.  If measures are taken in this regard, then, the city will not face water crisis to some extent, Kodgi suggested.

The chairman emphasized that most of the projects face no paucity of funds. He also advised corporators to hold detailed talks with officials of the corporation, to make the optimum use of funds and ensure that the citizens’ grievances are redressed at the earliest.

Highlighting initiative taken by the MCC for the effective functioning of drainage network. Rajashekar, executive engineer stated that the additional manholes established across the city for efficient functioning of sewerage are being chocked up owing to dumping domestic waste in the sewage pipes.  Moreover, measures are being taken to cover the manholes with solid iron lids with frequent clearing of drainages.

When the issue of solid waste management was raised,  Rajashekar replied that  Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Project (KUDCEMP) has successfully upgraded the landfill at Pacchanady, in the outskirts of city and if the facility gets adequate power supply MCC will set a model to other corporations in executing solid waste management efficiently.

Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu, deputy mayor Shakila Kava and others were present on the occasion.
