Mangaluru, Mar 4: The 35th annual convocation of Mangalore University was held at Mangala auditorium on Friday, March 3.
In the programme chaired by minister of higher education, Basavaraya Reddy, Prof Ajay K Sood, of Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi delivered convocation speech. The minister bestowed Dr B A Vivek Rai with honorary doctorate.
University chancellor Prof K Byrappa, registrar Prof K M Lokesh, registrar of examinations A M Khan, members of the syndicate and members of the academic council were present.
As many as 56 research scholars received PhD, 590 students got post-graduate degrees, while degree certificates were handed over to 1,516 students who completed their graduation. 43 received gold medals, while 63 received cash prizes.
Deevit S Kotian of Alva's College secured first rank, two gold medals and two cash awards in post-graduation, mass communication and journalism.
Deevit, son of Beltangady taluk Peradi residents Sridhara Kotian and Lalitha couple selected journalism and made excellent achievement. He is also a Yakshagana artiste and has participated in more than 350 Yakshagana shows and become a successful artiste. His father works as a tailor and his mother ties beedies for living.
They supported his education in spite of poverty. Dr Mohan Alva has provided free education since he joined Alva's College and encouraged him to study.
With the first rank in the department of mass communication and journalism, he received Dr T M A Pai memorial gold medal and late Ramakrishna Malya memorial gold medal. He also received with the medals Dakshina Kannada children’s festival 1988 and Public Relation Society of India cash awards. He currently serves as lecturer in Alva's College and convener of Alva's Deenkita Yakshagana study centre.
He says that we will succeed in life if we engage in cultural and extra-curricular activities along with education, and that his parents and Dr Mohan Alva of Alva's College are his inspiration.
Mustafa K H, son of an auto rickshaw driver from Madikeri, has proved that dreams and dedication can achieve great things. Mustafa, son of Husainar who works as an auto driver at Madapura, Madikeri, secured gold medal and five cash prizes in Kannada MA final examination of Mangalore University.
He received Kerodi Subba Rao memorial cash award, late B N Guptha trustee Janmabhoomi Press Trust memorial cash award, Dr B R Damodar Rao cash award, Golden Jobilee Kannada Film festival memorial cash award and Vasanth S Anantha Narayana and Professor S Anantha Narayana cash award.
Mustafa's achievement is commendable because he has achieved this feat in spite of the ill health of his mother, Zubaida, and younger sister. Although the family is poor, Mustafa all along was being egged on by his father to set sight on excellence. Added to his father's encouragement, his own dedication and hard work have paid rich dividends.
Mustafa, after completing degree education through Field Marshal Cariappa College at Madikeri, completed his postgraduate degree, MA in Kannada, in Mangalore University. Currently he has been serving Alva's PU College Moodbidri in the capacity of lecturer. Mustafa has already registered himself for pursuing PhD degree under the guidance of Dr Somanna about well-known critic, Ki Ram Nagaraj.
Mustafa, during his college days, used to contribute articles to various magazines and publications. He confesses that he used revenue from these writings for purchasing books. He says that he was tremendously influenced by the literary works of writer, Tejaswi.
He has written ‘Kandaddu Kaadiddu’ in Kannada besides several research writings. He dreams of being a lecturer after completing his research.
