Udupi, Feb 16: A woman, who was suspected to be in a drunken stupor, died after falling from the steps of a commercial building at Kadiyali here on Thursday February 16.

The deceased has been identified as Rajashree (57), a resident of Udyavar.

It is learnt that two days ago, Rajashree had joined her new job at Tasty Land restaurant in a complex here. The restaurant is located in the ground floor, with a flight of stairs leading to the basement from the parking space. There is no barricade between the parking lot and the basement.

Rajashree attended work on Thursday morning. In the afternoon, she was going down the stairs when she accidentally slipped and fell over to the basement, suffering head injuries. She died of incessant bleeding on the spot.

Sources said that Rajashree was in the habit of drinking even during work hours. It is suspected that she was drunk at the time of the incident. Two liquor bottles were found in her bag.

The hotel owner said that after joining work two days ago, she borrowed Rs 1,000 from him saying that she needed the money for treatment of a family member and for her son's certificate.

Rajashree is survived by her husband and three children.

Udupi town police have registered a case.

Lack of safety standards are causing these type of deaths.
No railings, no barricades, no warning signs, no marks. This is India, aur yahan sab chalta hain. Who cares.

This is pure settling with media and police department by the building and hotel owner. The building is not properly planned and proper railing is not given. Many years back one of our neighbour lost her life falling into pit in a hotel in Mulky . No one to ok responsibility of ythen and even now people want to push this into victims' thtoat with 2 bottles of whyskey.

Sad,when one sees these steps one can slip and fall ,break their neck without drinking.may be she was drunk, but even a drunk person can walk without falling.steps are so high and not meant for any elder persons.Did anyone thought she slipped because some sickness like high blood pressure or giddiness had?possibility of getting a stroke and fall?Because she was drinking, fast everybody pushed the diagnosis and closed the matter.sad.Heartfelt sympathy to the family.May her soul rest in peace.

Simply don't blame the women. Its not her fault. If there was proper railing on the Stairs, she wouldnt have fell though she was drunk. Sue the Constructor. Poor lady lost her life just in 2 days after joining the job.RIP.

This is a negligence on part of building owner. How can he have the stairs without the protection/railings? How can they blame the person saying the drunk for their own negligence.

Agree Karan! Even a person never tasted alcohol may slip in such steps....careless to the core! This type of accident was waiting to happen! This is our India...we find such accident zone in various areas in day to day life mostly on roads, curves, manholes, telephone cable diggers and so on! If responsible people are ined heavily such cases may minimize!!

Is it also not the responsibility of the local government to inspect the building before allowing it to open since it is a commercial building?

Vidya, Are you trying to prove drunk person safely hold bag to not to break bottles and allowing her head to injure?? Why didn't hotel owner send someone to drop lady to arranged auto ? Did police took permission from court to take depressed son to mortuary to identify ? Police negligence caused another young mans death.

Jossy, Stick to the subject at hand. what do you wish to convey by your silly remark. 1 st we need to find out whether the restaurant owner is the owner of the building. Secondly drunk or not , It was a deliberate negligence on the part of the builder & a safety hazard. For all we know the poor Lady must have been harresd at work & now the 2 bottles must have been simply planted in her bag. the builder & the owner must be arrested & the ladys family duly compensated for flaunting safety rules.

Alan, The Autopsy Report will reveal if she was drunk. If she was not drunk necessary action will be initiated by the police. My comments are based on media reports & I do not have a criminal mind ...
