India hands over Mallya extradition request to UK

New Delhi, Feb 9 (IANS): India on Thursday handed over a request for the extradition of liquor baron Vijay Mallya to the British High Commission, seeking his presence to face trial in connection with a Rs 9,000 crore loan default case.

"We have today handed over the request for extradition of Vijay Mallya as received from the CBI to the UK High Commission in New Delhi. We have requested the UK side to extradite him to face trial in India," Vikas Swarup, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said at a briefing here.

India's request comes nearly three months after British Prime Minister Theresa May's India visit during which Prime Minister Narendra Modi had handed over a list of 57 fugitives, including Christian Michel, Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi, against whom extradition requests are pending.

Mallya fled to Britain in March 2016 after being pursued in courts by a consortium of banks seeking to recover about Rs 9,000 crore owed by him and his now defunct Kingfisher Airlines.

A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official said the agency's Mumbai branch had managed to issue a court order regarding Mallya's extradition last week and it was later handed over to the External Affairs Ministry through legal channels.

The CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are the two agencies probing Mallya's case on different aspects.

The CBI had in January filed its chargesheet against Mallya in the Rs 9,000 crore loan default case under charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy. He was later declared absconder.

Despite multiple injunctions, Mallya has failed to appear before the ED investigators who are probing the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Asserting that India has a "legitimate" case against Mallya, Swarup said if an extradition request is honoured, it shows the UK's "sensitivity towards our concerns".

"We have an extradition treaty with Britain and a legitimate case against Mallya. Now, it's up to the British authorities to take further action," Swarup added.

Under the laws of extradition, a host country is expected to ship back a man wanted for crime in his own country.

Mallya, who has called his stay in the UK since April 2016 a "forced exile", has denied the charges against him.

Most of us enjoyed the products of UB group!

It also takes us back to our memory lane, when we enjoyed all well dressed gorgeous air hostess, mind blowing- relaxing beverages, yearly calendars with hot girls(which we secretly or openly enjoy it) .. etc.

We were proud of the fact that India made its entry in Formula one racing - 'Force India' , we were also proud of the fact that Mallya bought sword of 18th century Mysoor ruler Tipu Sultan after 200 years from British!

We cheered for RCB each time, which is owned by Mallya!

We also enjoyed his life style & charisma. More over we also felt proud that he is our own man from coastal region!

In business, ups & downs are part of it and when some one falls down, we laugh at him! This time Mr.Mallya went really very low and he needs our support, at least morally!

Had he stayed in India and tried honestly to repay loan amount, then everybody would have supported him morally..even our judiciary supports such people. But he is arrogant.

Vicky, agree that there r ups & down in business. But in Mallya's case he took loan from the banks to inject to King Fisher, whereas he diverted the same funds to Foreign countries. Yes he bought Tippu's sword, he donated 1kg gold to temple, but failed to pay the outstanding salaries of drivers & loaders of King Fisher Airline!

This drama will go on till UP elections.
As soon as all assembly elections are over, matter will die down immediately.

    Is is not a joke.
Same govt. allowed Mallya for a day light robbery to flee to UK with over tons of luggage to U.K. and same Govt is fooling around to bring him back.

All Indians are intelligent to know this including Bhaktas but NOT BHAKTAS.

Like bringing Dawood to the book was a promise made the nation in 2014 manifesto, in 2019 it'll be Mallya. There will be some visits by top brass to UK on this pretext, the same way they did in Dawood's case and the final outcome will be Aryabhata's invention.

This is nothing but part of well rehearsed drama which is evident from the fact that the notification to immigration to thwart his exit was revoked by New Delhi. Only after that he using his diplomatic passport took off to UK along with nine suitcases and GF.
