Bengaluru, Feb 9: A writ petition, which sought the stay on the mayoral election of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), has been dismissed by state High Court on Wednesday, February 8. Now, the election, proposed to be held before March 12 for the mayor and deputy mayor posts, can go on as planned without any hindrance.
JD(S) corporator from Mangaluru city Abdul Azim had approached High Court with a writ petition to bring a stay order to the impending election by questioning the reservation policy. Currently, the mayor post has been reserved for a woman while the deputy mayor post has been reserved for a person from schedule caste.
The court which heard the arguments from both the sides dismissed the petition. Advocate General Ponnanna had appeared on behalf of the government.
During the initial period of the current administration of MCC, a stay order had delayed the mayoral election by a year. That petition too had questioned the reservation policy.
