Maharashtra textbook says ugliness prompts demand for more dowry

Mumbai, Feb 2 (PTI): A textbook for Class XII in Maharashtra has cited an outrageous reason for the dowry problem prevalent in India - "ugliness" and physical handicap of a girl.

The remark appears in a chapter in the sociology textbook titled 'Major Social Problems in India' of the state Secondary and Higher Secondary education Board.

Along with other factors like religion, caste system, social prestige and compensation principle, the chapter cites "ugliness" as a reason for the grooms' families to demand more dowry.

"If a girl is ugly and handicapped, then it becomes very difficult for her to get married. To marry such girls, bridegroom and his family demand more dowry. Parents of such girls become helpless and pay dowry as per the demands of the bridegroom as family. It leads to rise in the practice of dowry system," the textbook says.

When asked about the passage which could be objected to by gender rights groups, an official of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education today said the matter will be looked into.

Board chairman Gangadhar Mamane said, "I will discuss the issue with the board of studies and will then comment on it."

Reality check! Society knows that money talks. But don't put those thoughts in young minds; they will for ever lose their self-esteem and blame their parents for bringing them into the world! It is a cruel thing to put these things in tany book, especially textbooks.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has attributed his state's high rates of malnutrition to vegetarianism and figure-conscious Gujarati girls.
In an interview to The Wall Street Journal, an American news daily, Modi said, "The middle class is more beauty-conscious than health-conscious-that is a challenge."
"If a mother tells her daughter to have milk, they'll have a fight-she'll tell her mother, 'I won't drink milk. I'll get fat.'" he told the daily.

What can we expect from government when Prime Minister of the nation views the women of India? For BJP governance 'Selfie with daughter' and Mahapanchayat in the name of beti bahu bachao to stroke communal tension is important.

Ugly or pretty, every parents their kids are valued asset. People taught in Sangh parivar remain impotent don't understand family value.

You cannot expect anything better from the present Maharastra Government. The contents of the textbook for class 8th justifies dowry for causes mentioned therein when it is an offence in the books of law. We Indians are truly patient to tolerant such nonsense.

Whether this is right or wrong to be in the text book, it is not for me to say. But, what is written is 100% reality. I can pinpoint men who have married such girls after taking financial and non financial benefits, giving more importance for benefits than the girls. Conversely, beautiful girls are given in marriage to ugly and not good looking men because they have money and position.

This is what you are gonna teach the future generation... it's not the girls ugliness or disability, but purely the ugliness of the society that's making it disabled. Pathetic...
