Cash withdrawal limit likely to continue even after Dec 30

New Delhi, Dec 26 (PTI): Restrictions on withdrawal of cash from banks and ATMs are likely to continue beyond the December 30 deadline as currency printing presses and the RBI have not been able to keep pace with the demand of new currency notes.

As the 50-day deadline for completion of demonetisation process draws near, there is a growing consensus among bankers that the restrictions on withdrawal would have to continue even in the New Year so as to maintain orderly working at the banks.

Banks at many places are not in a position to disburse even the current limit of Rs 24,000 per week due to cash crunch and are rationing the valid currency depending on cash availability.

If this limit is withdrawn for individuals and businesses from January 2, it is unlikely that banks would be able to disburse the higher demand for valid currencies given the current cash position.

“Most of us think that the withdrawal limit would not be completely withdrawn. It is a possibility that it could be relaxed if the cash situation improves,” said a senior public sector bank official.

At a time when banks are struggling to meet the demand of individual customers, it would be impossible to service MSME and big corporates which require cash in large quantity, the official said, the practical way would be to relax it gradually.

Recently, SBI chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya had also indicated that restriction on withdrawals cannot be lifted entirely unless more cash is made available to banks by the RBI.

After the demonetisation of high-value Rs 500/1,000 notes, the government has fixed a limit of Rs 24,000 per week on withdrawal from bank accounts and Rs 2,500 per day from ATMs in view of the currency crunch that followed.

The government and the RBI have not specified when the restrictions will be withdrawn. Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa had said the withdrawal cap would be will be reviewed after December 30.

Cash withdrawal limit should continue. After April 1, 2017, any CASH withdrawals beyond Rs.3,00,000 per person should be subject to TDS from 10% to 30% depending on the amount. Higher denomination notes should be gradually withdrawn from the circulation.

for what will people need more than 24,000/= per week, they can do online transfer or cheque payment. it has become a fashion for making statements against modi. the game plan maybe to abolish income tax by charging a minimum tax for online payments,, then everybody will be in the tax frame.

Cash withdrawal limit is o.k. as long as Govt is making provision for alternative mode of payment.
These provisions should have been made before rationing cash disbursals.
For PAYTM in many places, some mobile networks are working and some are not.
In an area, where Reliance network is working Vodafone doesn't and vice versa. In such scenario everyone can't use PAYTM.
Many traders have ordered for swipe machines but bankers are out of stock, asking traders to wait for minimum 3 months.
In such scenario, cash rationing is suicidal.

Being a visionary is immaterial You need to take bold steps to bring your visions to reality.
I appreciate Modi for taking that bold step to change india for better.
I still feel if the same exercise has been done by Manmohan Singh, it would have been in a better organized way. But he didn't have the spine to do it.

Exactly. The very purpose of this entire exercise was to bail out banks from bad debts of NPAs which is achieved by siphoning off public money since Nov 9th and if the money is returned now, banking sector will be back to square A. SBI alone has written off bad loans to the tune of 70000 crores of 63 willful defaulters. Now banks with their coffers full, can very well forward loans to prospective corporate willful defaulters!. Unearthing black money? that was just a temporary side effect which was portrayed as main effect. There's no other logical explanation for issuance of 2K note. Now what's stopping hoarders/counterfeiters going back to their old habits using 2K note? In fact many cases have already been reported which could well be a tip of the iceberg.
