Kolkata, Jan 6: Violence has struck the Visva Bharati University in Shantiniketan after a woman student was shot dead in the campus on Sunday.
Sawawati Pal, a final year music student, was killed in the college hostel.
After shooting her, the killer then turned the gun on himself and is in hospital with critical injuries.
Pal, a student of Rabindrasangeet, was from Ghatal in West Midanpore district.
Police said the youth entered Sri Sadan Hostel and went to the room of Pal and fired at her from point blank range. He then turned the gun on himself.
Students rushed the victim and the youth to Bolpur Sub-divisional Hospital. The girl was declared dead by doctors while her killer was admitted with serious injury, police said.
Meanwhile, students of the university are protesting against the breach of security, which led to the killing in broad daylight.
This is the third incident of campus slaying within a month.
Earlier this month, a student of a government school of Satna in Madhya Pradesh was shot dead by a senior schoolmate.
In December 2007, a 14-year-old student was killed by two of his classmates in Gurgaon.
