Mangaluru, Oct 24: Members of various like-minded organisations conducted a protest demanding justice to principal of Milagres college who was assaulted by a student recently here at DC office on October 24.
Ronald, from Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of Milagres College said "Mohammed Shahnawaz was a rude student and the college was reluctant to give him seat in the beginning itself. But considering his future Fr Michael Santhumayor agreed to give him seat. He had been given many chances but he continued his misbehaviour. Since he had shortage of attendance principal had called a parents and teachers meeting. This particular student attacked the principal. I request the police department to arrest him immediately and give justice to the principal, so that such incident will not repeat in any college."
Former president of BJP minority wing, Franklin Monteiro said "The number people joined here in the protest is not enough. If principal of a reputed college which is more than 100 years old is attacked during broad daylight, then it is a shame on civilised society. The BJP strongly condemns this act. If you closely observe the CCTV footage, then you will notice 5 people running up and down. Mohammed Shahnawaz had bought four other people who do not belong to the college. He had also bought something covered in white towel. I request the police to investigate this case thoroughly. “
“Our police apprehend big criminals based on small clue. I do not understand why they have not arrested him even though it has been three days. I demand that the other four people also should be arrested. If police do not arrest Mohammed Shahnawaz by Wednesday evening, then I with the support of others will sit on fast unto death in front of deputy commissioner’s office." Monteiro added.
CITU leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said "If a student attacks the principal, misbehaves with teachers and female students then he is a Goonda. He is not fit to be called a student. Fr Santhumayor is known for his discipline. Assaulting him because he corrected the student is condemnable. We strongly oppose such acts. Our police who arrest big criminals are not able to arrest him even though it has been three days since the incident took place. There is question whether there is any political pressure on the police. Police should arrest the culprit at the earliest. Otherwise they will have to face serious consequences. We are with the principal. We will fight until justice is delivered."
Rosario parish priest Fr J B Crasta, ICYM director Fr Ronald D’Souza, NSUI president Ashith Pereira, BJP minority morcha president Joylus D’Souza, Ex MLC Monappa Bhandary and others were present.
A delegation led by Fr J B Crasta and MLC Capt Ganesh Karnik also met deputy commissioner (DC) Dr K G Jagadeesh with a petition to arrest the culprit.
