Mangaluru: Police operation against gamblers - five held

Mangaluru, Jul 29: In separate operations conducted in the city against gambling, city crime branch (CCB) personnel and policemen attached to city (south) police station arrested five persons and took into possession Rs 94,750 in cash besides other things.

The arrested accused are Ritesh (35) and M Jayaram Shetty (49) from Naguri, Bipin Salian (50) from Kankanady, and Keertan Karkera (31) from Naguri. A total of Rs 90,000 in cash, three cellphones, and slips used for writing matka betting numbers were taken into possession.

The policemen said that the accused were engaged in matka, a kind of gambling, in public place near Naguri bus stand. CCB inspector, Sunil Y Naik and police sub-inspector, Shyam Sundar, were involved with this operation. They were handed over to rural police station for further action.

In the other incident, the police personnel of south station raided a spot near the truck yard on the western side of Goods Shed Road where matka activity was on. They arrested Shivanand Shanbhogue (53) from Goods Shed Road who was allegedly involved with gambling activity, and recovered from his possession Rs 4,750 in cash.
