Udupi, Jul 25: Famous TV journalist and cover story fame of Suvarna Channel, Vijayalakshmi Shibaroor was awarded the Vaddarse Raghurama Shetty Journalism award on Sunday July 24 at Bunts' Bhavan near Brahmavar. The programme was held under the aegis of Brahmavar zone working journalists' association.
Social fighter S R Hiremath speaking at the occasion said, "Farmers should be emerged as political powers. It is only when a man contributes towards society, can his life be complete. True swarajya can only be attained when a man opposes all social evils or harassment."
"There is need to study more about the constitution in order to aquire knowledge on independence."
"Politicians are servants of the people. We must raise questions when a job has not been complete," he said.
Hiremath speaking on the land bill said, "Agricultural land should not be used for other purposes. The land link policy should be changed. Cooperative societies are strong tools in protecting the interests of the farmers."
On receiving the award Vijayalakshmi said, "No one is bold enough to protest the social problems. There is fear of losing one's self-esteem."
Replying to the public she said, "As a common man I can present facts of society and false happenings in society. After that, it is left to the public to take action or follow up on particular issues. Journalists do not have special privileges in leading a peaceful life."
She urged the students and the journalists to be honest in their field. "There is a lack of honest journalists. A person should be honest before proceeding to journalism or any profession. Only then can he do justice to his job. Students should be studious and abreasy of current issues."
Mohan Alva, president of Alva's group of educational institutions inaugurated the programme.
District in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj, Jayaprakash Hegde, former MP, Kota Srinivas Poojary, MLC and others were present at the morning session.
Chittur Prabhakar Acharya, president of the association presided over the programme.
The seminar was carried out in two sessions on different topics.
Rohini, information department officer, Jayakar Suvarna, district working journalists' association, Janaki Brahmavar, Praveen Shetty and others were present at the closing ceremony.
