Kshema students conduct awareness programmes under Mission Hope

Mangaluru, Jul 23: Students of K S Hegde Medical Academy along with the department of psychiatry- Kshema are organising awareness programmes on 'Substance Abuse And The Importance Of De- Addiction' under the banner of 'Mission Hope' in July. 

Mission Hope is a charitable and awareness initiative started by the students of K S Hegde Medical Academy. It kick-started on January 16 at the International Kite Festival at Panambur. It started with the aim of doing something small and meaningful so as to bring a change in the life of people in need.
Students have done various programmes under the banner of 'Mission Hope' like awareness on substance abuse and de-addiction at the International Kite Festival on Panambur beach.

A blood donation camp and awareness programme were conducted at Justice K S Hegde Charitable Hospital. Almost 300 students participated and the hospital received blood from almost 80 people on this occasion.

Box of Hope- It is an initiative where the volunteers of Mission Hope collected 500 kg of clothes and stationery items, which included around 3,000 items of clothing. With this small initiative Mission Hope was able to clothe almost 3,000 underprivileged people in and around the city. The collected clothes were donated to various NGOs (including The Red Cross Society Of India) and various other orphanages and old age homes.

Poor Patients Fund- K S Hegde Charitable Hospital is visited by hundreds of patients on a daily basis, many of whom cannot afford basic treatment. The students under the banner of 'Mission Hope' started a fund for the betterment of the condition of such unfortunate people. The collection now has exceeded Rs 1.75 lac.

We believe in the motto 'catch them young'. Through this drive we aim to create a strong sense of aversion towards drugs and substance abuse in the minds of the coming generation.

Awareness programes and de-addiction drive July
As part of creating awareness on substance abuse and the importance of de-addiction, students organized awareness events at various PU colleges and high schools in the city on July 19 and 20. Awareness talks and skits were arranged at St Aloysius School and Mahesh PU College.

In order to see active participation from school students, essay writing competition for students of 11th and 12th, and poster making competition for students of 8th, 9th and 10th was arranged on July 22 at the college. Around 50 students from various schools from the city and the suburbs participated in the poster making competition. Around 30 colleges participated in essay competition.

On July 23 a programme is arranged at City Centre Mall were the students will perform various skits, band and other such events. J R Lobo, MLA south zone has given the consent to be the chief guest for the event. Dr Satheesh Kumar Bhandary, dean, K S Hegde Medical Academy will preside over the function.
