Udupi, Jul 18: Milagres College and Milagres PU College, Kallianpur celebrated their golden jubilee for the year 2016-17 at Milagres Tri-Centenary hall here on Saturday July 16.
Minister for fisheries, youth affairs and sports and district in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj unveiled the jubilee signboard as part of the celebration.
In his inaugural address, he said, "The college is established in the rural area by the blessings of God. I am very fortunate to be born in such a historical place. Milagres College has enhanced the lives of many students and I am one of them. This institute has provided immense love and care."
Directing attention to the development of the district, he said, "Just three districts of Karnataka are advanced in health and education. Among them, Bengaluru city, Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are on the top of the list. Catholic education board governs nearly 270 educational institutes. The contribution of Christian missionaries has played a major role in developing the education sector. Students are the future ambassadors, thus each poor child should get education." Minister Pramod wished the institute all the very best.
He was felicitated during the programme.
Bishop of Udupi diocese and president of Catholic Educational Society, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo presided over the ceremony. In his address he said, "The college intends to organize various programmes for the students, teachers, parents, alumni and the general public to mark the golden jubilee. The institute has plans of having a corpus fund of more than a crore to promote education of poor students."
Dr Gerald Pinto, principal of the college read out the introductory note.
Fr Lawrence C D’Souza, secretary Catholic Educational Society, Udupi and Janaki Brahmavar, president, Tulu Sahitya Academy and others were present.
Fr Stany B Lobo welcomed the gathering and Savitha Kumari, principal of the college proposed the vote of thanks.
The ceremony was graced by senior students, retired teachers, parents and other dignitaries of the vicinity.
