Mangaluru, Jul 12: AICS chemistry workshop was organized at Lourdes Central School on July 7 and 8. Thirty science teachers from different schools in and around the city participated in the workshop.
The workshop was conducted by Dr Prabhakar Sastri, director of M/s Isa Technologies Pvt Limited Manipal.
During the inaugural function on July 7, the science coordinator of the school, Linet D’Souza welcomed the gathering. The principal Fr Robert D’Souza inaugurated the workshop by lighting the lamp. In his address, the principal asked the participants to feel at home and learn to utilize effectively the techniques of teaching chemistry. Anita Thomas introduced the resource person. Gretta Menezes was the master of ceremony. The inaugural function concluded with the vote of thanks by Harshitha Shetty.
At the workshop, the resource person Dr Prabhakar Shastry explained the innovative tools and resources to build students’ and teachers’ confidence. During the session, he taught different active learning techniques and discussed ways in which they can be implemented in day to day teaching. He taught the methods to connect the text to the field of students’ interest. He advised to involve activities and experiments in the lesson, which will not only help students learn chemistry but also help their interest and engage them in the lessons. Many activities/techniques were taught to make teaching more fun and interesting.
The workshop continued on July 8. In this session, lab experiments and active learning strategies in chemistry were discussed, which would help the students develop a better understanding of the particle nature of matter, which will help them progress.
The workshop continued till 12 noon.
The valedictory ceremony was held at 12.15 pm. Principal Fr Robert D’Souza, vice principal Belita Mascarenhas graced the function. During the ceremony several teachers gave their feedback. The resource person was honoured on behalf of Lourdes Central School. The dignitaries distributed certificates to all the participants. The valedictory ceremony concluded with the vote of thanks by Anita Thomas.
