Mangalore, Nov 6: An exhibition-cum-sale of the products produced by Self Help Groups (SHGs) was organized by the taluk panchayat under the Kushalakarmigala Grama Yojane, as part of the Swarnajayanthi Gram Swarozgar Yogne (SGSY), near taluk panchayat Office here on Monday, Nov 5. The exhibition has been organized to make SHGs self-reliant through providing them a market and it will be open till November 7.
The products on display were earthen ware, pots, earthen water jug, magic lamp, lamp shades, cane chairs, iron sickles and knives, stone carvings, wood carvings, handloom sarees and bed sheets, cane chairs, bamboo products and many more.
Speaking on the occasion Zilla Panchayat deputy secretary Shivshankar informed that SGSY has taken the step of providing a market for the products produced by SHOs through which the SHGs can earn a livelihood. He said more people must be involved in self-employment like producing readymade garments.
Further he opined that the products have vast potential and the city is suitable for the same. Due to the loopholes in the Integrated Rural Development programme of the government the SGSY has been implemented, he declared.
Another speaker Uday Kumar Hegde the Lead Bank officer while appreciating the initiative taken to organise the exhibition said that over 35,000 SHGs have an understanding with banks. Banks provide loans up to Rs 5 lac through easy procedures for SHGs, but they should not misuse them. Good packaging for the products and associations which market them is what is required at this juncture. He further opined that elected representatives should think over this matter of organizing more such exhibitions.
Taluk panchayat president Sriyala Hegde inaugurated the exhibition. Taluk panchayat vice president Sukesh Shetty, Taluk panchayat standing committee president Vinod Kumar Bolur, TP executive officer Kanthraj, TP member Yashwanth Alva, ZP members, department officials and SHG group members were present on the occasion.
