Munich, April 14 (IANS): Bayern Munich captain Philipp Lahm made his 103rd Champions League appearance to equal Oliver Kahn's record for the most appearances by German players in the European football competition.
Lahm appeared in Wednesday night's 2-2 draw against Benfica in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals, as Bayern Munich advanced to the semis, winning the first tie 3-2 on aggregate (1-0 in the first leg), reports Efe.
Already down 0-1 after the first leg in Germany, underdogs Benfica had to play Wednesday night's match without top scorer Jonas who was suspended, and the injured Gaitan and Mitroglou.
While the visitors concentrated on ball control, the hosts, egged on by the 60,000-plus crowd in Lisbon's Estadio da Luz, played defensively.
"It's nice that I'm still playing at this level," Lahm commented on his new record after the match.
Porto's Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas holds the international record, boasting 156 appearances.
