New Delhi, Apr 1 (IANS): Union Fertiliser Minister Ananth Kumar on Thursday said urea production reached a record high of 24.5 million tonnes in 2015-16 with the potential to decrease imports by two million tonnes.
"In the last one year, a silent urea revolution has taken place in the country and as a result there has been no shortage of urea for farmers. It is a remarkable achievement," he said.
The production in 2014-15 was 22.5 million tonnes.
Kumar attributed the rise in urea production to government policy initiatives.
"For food security of the country, it is very important to ensure the soil nutrient security for the farmers and that's what we all are aiming," he said, expressing confidence that with increased urea production, imports can be reduced.
He said that compulsory neem coating on urea is providing benefits of an insecticide and also promoting soil health.
