• 19-yr-old boy approached ACB after coming to know of it from a poster

Mumbai, Sep 22: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday arrested a teacher and an admission inspector from the Government Polytechnic School at Kherwadi, after they demanded a bribe from a 19-year-old boy to get him admitted.

A Bureau official said Mithilesh Sharma, a class 10 pass, aspired to complete a carpentry course from the school and then try and get a government job. When he approached the school authorities, he was told that since he was a candidate from Bihar, he will not be able to get admission in the school, which prefers candidates from Maharashtra. Sharma had come to the city two years ago and was staying at Santacruz with his relatives.

Sharma then approached Ganesh Ambokar, a carpentry teacher in the school, who introduced him to Uttam Rathod, who carried out the inspection of candidates for admission. Bureau officials said Ambokar told Sharma that he will have to spend some extra money to get the work done through Rathod. When Sharma approached Rathod early this month, he demanded Rs 5,000 for getting Sharma admitted to the carpentry course. However, Sharma, who had come to know of the ACB from a poster he had seen at a government office, decided to approach the Bureau on September 5.

“We verified the complaint and laid a trap. Ambokar and Rathod were arrested red-handed while accepting the first installment of Rs2,000 from Sharma,” said Raja Powar, additional deputy commissioner of police, ACB. Ambokar and Rathod were produced in the special ACB court on Friday and were remanded in police custody till September 26.
