Mumbai, Feb 6 (Mumbai Mirror): Former television executive Indrani Mukerjea, who has been accused of murdering her daughter Sheena Bora, applied for bail on medical grounds on Friday, saying she suffers from a neurological condition and other complications that could trigger a stroke.
The 44-year-old (pictured) has also said in her 17-page application, submitted to a special CBI court, that her mother's death on October 1 had left her devastated, further complicating her condition.
Indrani, who has been in a lock-up since August last year, was not told about her mother's demise for a week as she was in a "fragile" condition and the news could have "severely affected her health", according to the bail plea.
She has described the frequent blackouts she has suffered in custody and how she has lost over 18 kg in the past few months. "Given the deteriorating medical condition, it is essential in the interest of justice that she should be enlarged on bail for proper medical care and recovery," the application states.
It adds that Indrani needs to be fit to stand trial. But she has not mentioned any details of the case or made any statement against her husband and former Star India boss, Peter Mukerjea, who has also been arrested over the murder, in the application.
The special court on Friday asked the CBI, which is investigating the case, to respond to the bail request by February 12.
Indrani, her former husband Sanjeev Khanna and her driver Shyamvar Rai have been accused of strangling 22-year-old Sheena inside a moving car on April 24, 2012. Her body was burned and buried in a Raigad forest the next day. The CBI took over the case in September last year and filed a chargesheet against the three on November 19. The same day, the agency arrested Peter.
On Thursday, the CBI obtained the court's permission to quiz Indrani, Khanna and Rai.
In her bail application, Indrani has said her neurologist had prescribed her medicines that she needs to take for life. She needs to live in a stay-free environment for the medicines to work. "[Indrani] is suffering from 'chronic small vessels ischemic changes', and as a result, the supply of oxygen to brain may get interrupted which may result in a stroke...," reads the application.
She has claimed that it takes 40 to 60 minutes to reach a hospital from Byculla women's prison, where she is lodged. She once fainted around 5.30 am, but officials examined her only at 11.45 am and took her to a hospital around 2 pm.
