Mangaluru, Jan 19: Police personnel attached to Ullal station have succeeded in arresting a person who had evaded arrest after having been accused of abetting the suicide of his wife by inflicting mental and physical torture on her in pursuance of his demand for more dowry.
Ramlath, daughter of Hasanabba from Adkarepadpu village in Konaje village had married Abubakker Siddique, a resident of Nadar-Madoor, about 15 years back. The couple has three children. Since the last five years, Abubakker Siddque, assisted by his mother, Nebisa, and sisters, Mumtaz, Asma and her husband, Younus, allegedly kept mentally and physically torturing Ramlath, and pressurized her to bring five lac rupees and gold ornaments by way of additional dowry. Although the two families met with the mediation of leaders of the community twice to settle the issue, the families failed to reach an understanding.
Ramlath, frustrated at this nagging problem, came to her parental home on December 13 and told her parents that she was unable to bear torture at the hands of family members of her husband anymore. On the very next day she committed suicide. A case about this incident was filed at Konaje police station, which was later transferred to Ullal station.
Accused Abubakker Siddique absconded after the incident. Although he had filed an application for anticipatory bail, it had not been sanctioned. Ullal police, who were trying to lay their lands on the accused, in the meanwhile, succeeded in arresting him on Saturday. On being produced at the court, he was remanded to judicial custody.
