Karkala, Jan 4: Thieves entered Kutady Goddess Rakteshwari temple at Kalya village in the taluk and took away copper and silver valuables worth about six lac rupees. The incident occurred on the night of Saturday January 2.

Silver sheets covering the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and four copper idols were stolen by the culprits. The incident came to light when the priest of the temple came to the temple to perform morning puja on Sunday.

As the thieves had purposefully spilled lamp oil on the floor, no traces of the thieves could be detected. The thieves however, have not touched the money in the donation box of the temple.

Sniffer dogs were summoned to the temple in a bid to gather evidence. The policemen of the town, who registered a case, guess that this was the handiwork of the gang which also conducted temple thefts at Brahmavar and Kaup recently, going by the way in which it was executed.
