Beltangady, Dec 24: A toy with the appearance of a mobile phone exploded on Wednesday December 23 evening at Devaragundi in Machchina village in the taluk. As a result, a boy, nine-year-old Gurukiran, suffered injuries to his left eye and left hand.

The toy with battery generated different kinds of ring tones at the push of a button, it is said. It was bought from a local shandy, and Gurukiran was playing with it when it suddenly went off. The boy was then taken to the government hospital here. After first aid, he was rushed to Mangaluru for advanced treatment.

The toy had removable battery that is used for clocks. The family believes that the battery would have exploded. The toy was cheap, and its splinters pierced the eye and hand of the boy when it exploded. The locals feel that substandard quality of the toy resulted in injuries to the boy.
