Karkala, Dec 17: A motor bike rider was killed after he sustained serious injuries in an accident involving his vehicle and a bus near Miyyar in the taluk on Wednesday December 16 afternoon.

Ashwath Poojary from Sooral Gundaje in Miyyar village (21) was the unfortunate bike rider to have been killed in this accident. Pillion rider, identified as Manjunath Poojary (21), who was Ashwath's neighbour, suffered injuries in the accident.

The motor bike being driven by Ashwath towards the town from the direction of Bajagoli overtook a bus at Kajarbail near Miyyar, and instantly hit a private bus that was coming from opposition direction, it is said. Both the motor bike-borne youth suffered severe head injuries. They were taken by locals to the government hospital where they were provided preliminary treatment. When being taken to Mangaluru for advanced treatment, Ashwath breathed his last.

Ashwath, who was employed at Bengaluru since the last couple of years, was on a visit to his native place since a few days to attend the marriage of his aunt here. He had visited Miyyar gram panchayat seeking to correct the mistake committed in the records in registering his date of birth, when he met with an accident. Ashwath was the eldest of two sons and a daughter of Babu Poojary from Sooral village. He was the breadwinner for the family.

The locals said that several accidents had happened at the spot where oncoming vehicles are not visible because of a road bend and bushes which have grown on roadside. They pointed out that recently a vehicle loaded with coal had turned turtle at this spot when trying to make room for an oncoming vehicle.

The family members of Ashwath said that diesel in the 108 ambulance in which Ashwath was being taken to Mangaluru went dry on the way, and they had to buy diesel for the ambulance on their own, by requesting other vehicles in the queue to allow them to get preferential service at the petrol bunk, duly losing precious time in the bargain.
