Mangaluru, Dec 14: The police personnel are required to be always disciplined. They cannot talk about their woes. Instead they are required to address the problems of others. When it comes to their own problems, they can only keep quiet and wait patiently for the problem to be solved.
Police personnel in Dakshina Kannada district have been waiting for the reimbursement of their transport allowance for the past two months. The transport allowance is the entitlement of every police personnel from the rank of officers to the ordinary police. If they travel in government buses, they do not have to pay as they carry passes called 'bus warrant.’ But if they travel by private buses or use other modes of transport, they have to spend the money from their pockets which will be reimbursed later. And that has been a practice for years.
13 police stations in four taluks of the district namely Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur and Sullia have not received transport allowance at all. They have sent the lists of pending allowance to be paid to then through station officers to the district police head quarters.
Normally when the police are not paid, that means the government does not have enough funds to pay. It seems that the government is going through a cash crunch. The free ration provided to police personnel in the form of rice and wheat has been not given for the past 6 months, it is said.
Unfortunately on their part, the police cannot ask any questions as it can be termed as indiscipline and even insubordination. They are keeping their fingers crossed and waiting for payment.
