Dharwad, Dec 12: A police constable from the city armed reserve police here committed suicide during his duty hours on Friday December 11 by firing at himself with his service rifle. The constable had been deputed on security duty at the treasury of Syndicate Bank, Hubballi.
Sulaiman Sundargeri (41), who ended his life this way, was a resident of Sainagar in the city. Police sources believe that he killed himself out of personal problems. Sulaiman reported for duty as per his routine at Syndicate Bank's branch at Neeligin Road here on Friday morning. Within a few minutes thereafter, he went into the room meant for security staff, and fired two rounds at himself with his .303 rifle. One of the rounds went wayward and hit the roof of the building, while the other made its way through the face of Sulaiman.
On account of the sound of the gun, siren of the building went off. Owner of the building immediately called up the bank manager. A report about the incident was filed at satellite police station, and body was sent to Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, where the grief of relatives of the deceased was found uncontrollable.
Sulaiman, who hailed from Uppina Betageri in the taluk, was working with the city armed reserve police since the last 19 years. He is survived by mother, wife, a son, and a daughter.
City police commissioner, Panduranga Rane, said that a death note has been found and that Sulaiman had decided to end his life because of personal reasons. He added that none of the CAR staff or family members were responsible for this incident. Deputy commissioner of police, Jinendra Khanagavi, said that a team of ballistic experts from Bengaluru will arrive and conduct investigation on the incident, as a rifle had been used to commit suicide.
