Udupi, Dec 3: The ‘World Disability Day’ which was jointly organized by Women and Child Welfare Department, disabled and senior citizens empowerment department, voluntary service organizations and non-disabled organizations was observed at Ammanni Ramanna Shetty hall here on Thursday December 3.
Weela Mendonsa inaugurated the event by lighting the lamp.
Chennabasappa, additional district commissioner, Udupi said that every disabled child is special and has talents. The children just need cooperation and a helping hand. Teachers and parents make them strong. The present government is working in favour of the welfare of poverty-stricken people. It is focusing on the all round growth of the society without discrimination of caste, religion or community.
Dinker Kenjur delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Empowerment of the disabled’. He said that special children have lots of opportunities in Mangaluru and Udupi districts. The government should work hard in meeting their rights and providing them facilities. He urged everyone to make use of the government benefits.
People should respect the disabled, but unfortunately we are trapped in catching all the governmental facilities. They should be encouraged to lead an independent life. He also asked for support from the NGOs.
Nearly 12 special children schools participated in the event. Colourful cultural programmes like dance and mimicry by the children were showcased. Handmade crafts and fancy items were displayed on the occasion.
Students were felicitated by the chief guests and prizes to the winners of the various competitions were distributed.
DySP Chandra Shekhar, Shankar Nayak, Zilla Panchayat project officer, Gracy Gonsalves, deputy director, women and children welfare department and others were present.
Niranjan Bhat, district disabled empowerment department officer welcomed the gathering and Ganesh Marate proposed the vote of thanks.
