Mangaluru, Oct 15: Malikayya Guttedar, who heads the state legislature's women and child welfare committee, said that recommendations would be made to the state government to appoint committed workers for the implementation of child welfare scheme and to conduct survey of children suffering from malnutrition in the districts of Dakshina Kabnnada, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru and Hassan.
He was addressing a progress review meeting relating to welfare schemes concerning women, children, specially abled people, senior citizens and sexual minorities concerning the above four districts held on Wednesday October 14 at the auditorium of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat. He noted that in spite of the government having released sufficient grants and schemes for the welfare of these people, the problem of malnutrition has not yet been fully addressed.
When members complained that government officials do not have proper data and figures, he noted that increase of grant would not help address the issue of malnutrition, which is transferred to the child from the mother.
Udupi district deputy commissioner, Dr Vishal R, said that the problem could be tackled by providing nutritious food to pregnant women on time, apart from extending medical facilities, and timely administration of right doses of medicine to the newborn etc. He therefore requested for posting of personnel who are committed to attend to these things properly.
Dakshina kannada superintendent of police, Dr Sharanappa S D, asked the committee to recommend recruitment of police to the district as only 557 policemen are working for ten lac people here. He pointed out that sending of policemen to places which witness trouble results in suspension of ongoing investigations.
Committee members and MLAs, S V Sankanur, Sambhaji Laxman Patil, Dr Jayamala Ramachandra, B Ramakrishna, J G Srnivas, Dr Umesh Jadhav, Allamaprabhu Patil, and joint secretary in the department, S Murthy, were present. District level officers of different departments from the four districts also participated.
