Tumakuru, Oct 12: There have been several tragic incidents in which small children got stuck inside abandoned borewells inadvertently and lost their lives. However, on Sunday, a resident of Sira taluk in the district was killed after he was sucked into a borewell by the force of water.
Kambanna (45), a farmer from Chikkagoola village in the taluk, came to know that water which got accumulated in the pond was entering the borewell because of torrential rain witnessed in the region since some days. On Sunday afternoon, out of curiosity, he went near the borewell with four of his friends to check. Because of the water current, he was instantly sucked into the borewell and got stuck there. Karibasappa and Omkar tried to save him, but narrowly escaped losing their own lives.
A large number of people rushed to the spot after learning about the tragedy that had befallen on Chikkagoola village. Fire brigade personnel too found it hard to lift the body of the farmer from the borwell because of the force of gushing water. In one such effort, the body had almost been lifted out and was being shifted to the boat, when the wooden log to which the rope was tied snapped, and the body slipped back into the water. The operation was resumed again, and the body could be retrieved at 7.40 pm. It was then transported to the taluk government hospital at Sira for postmortem.
