Zambia rues poor performance at All-Africa Games

Lusaka, Sep 24 (IANS): The Zambian government said it was disappointed over the performance of the country's athletes at the Congo Brazzaville All-Africa Games, the media reported.

Zambia sent 57 athletes to the 11th All-Africa Games but they only managed to reap one gold and one bronze medal, Xinhua news agency reported late Wednesday.

Minister of Youth, Sport and Child Development Vincent Mwale said the performance of the athletes was unsatisfactory and called the country's national sports association to intensify efforts to identify talents in various parts of the country.

The country, he said, had expected the athletes to perform to the expectation especially after the government did everything possible to ensure adequate preparations.

"Of course we are not satisfied with the performance of our athletes. We sent a good number and we expected good results. Personally, I expected judo and swimmers to do well," the report quoted him as saying.

Zambia's female 400m runner Kabange Mupopo reaped a gold medal while boxer Emmanuel Ngoma reaped a bronze medal.
