Mangaluru, Sep 14: Inmates of the boys hostel run by backward classes welfare department located at Shediguri, Ashok Nagar here, caught hold of one of the persons who used to brazenly enter the hostel premises and consume ganja, duly overlooking objections from the students.

The incident occurred on Saturday September 12 night. The arrested person happens to be Uday (27), while two others accompanying him, Hrishikesh (28), and Pachchu (25), managed to escape. It is said that the accused had entered the hostel compound and attacked the students. Angered by this incident, about 150 students of the hostel joined together in capturing the culprit.

It is gathered that it had become a common practice for ganja addicts to enter this hostel everyday and openly smoke ganja. Although the students and wardens had informed the police about this menace in the past, nothing had been done to control the miscreants. Frustrated by this lukewarm response, the students came together, and asked those smoking ganja in hostel premises on Saturday to leave their premises. The addicts, who were on a high at the time, turned aggressive and began to attack the hostel inmates.

The students then called the police control room, and also tried to detain the addicts. While two of the ganja smokers succeeded in running away, leaving their motor bikes ehind, the students succeeded in nabbing Uday and handing him over to police.

A case about the incident was registered in Urva police station. Investigation has been taken up.
